March , 2021President,Keio UniversityMessage fromthe PresidentKEIO UNIVERSITYMEDICAL SCIENCE FUNDThe Keio University Medical Science Fund was established through a generous donation by the late Dr. Mitsunada Sakaguchi, an alumnus of the Keio University School of Medicine. Its purpose is to contribute to the well-being of humankind through advancements in medicine and the life sciences and through the cultivation and exchange of globally-minded individuals.In 1995, entrusted with Dr. Sakaguchi’s commitment to medical science, Keio established the fund and various other initiatives to promote medical research and its creative development and advance medical science throughout the world. These initiatives include the Keio Medical Science Prize, Grants for International Activities in Medicine and the Life Sciences, Keio Medical Science Rising Star Award, Research Grants for Medicine and the Life Sciences, and the Sakaguchi Laboratory. Among these initiatives, the Keio Medical Science Prize is designed as an international award to recognize the outstanding and creative achievements of researchers in the fields of medicine and the life sciences.Keio University founder Yukichi Fukuzawa first developed an interest in medicine when studying at Tekijuku, Koan Ogata's private school in Osaka, which focused on Dutch studies. In 1892, Fukuzawa provided financial support for the creation and management of a research institute for Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato, who had just returned to Japan from conducting research in Germany. Dr. Kitasato made outstanding achievements in his research on infectious disease prevention and bacteriology and upheld Fukuzawa’s legacy by devoting himself to the foundation of a school of medicine at Keio University, which continues to produce excellent medical doctors and researchers today.With this tradition of medicine, I expect the Keio University Medical Science Fund will allow researchers in Japan and abroad to interact, further strengthen and expand upon medical and life science research, and contribute to an improvement in the well-being of humankind. I am sure that the Keio Medical Science Prize will continue to gain recognition as a prestigious international award.On behalf of everyone at the Keio University Medical Science Fund, I thank you all for your support.1
