Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, Winner of the 2008(13th) Keio Medical Science Prize, Receives the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The Karolinska Institute in Sweden announced on October 6th that this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi of Osaka University, along with his co-recipients, Dr. Mary E. Brunkow of the Institute for Systems Biology (USA) and Dr. Fred Ramsdell of Sonoma Biotherapeutics (USA). The award recognizes their fundamental discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance (immune regulation in peripheral tissues) and the identification of Regulatory T cells (Treg cells).
This year's Nobel Prize marks the fourth consecutive year and the 13th laureate of the Keio Medical Science Prize to subsequently receive the Nobel Prize. The recent Nobel winners who are past recipients of the Keio Prize include: Dr. Demis Hassabis and Dr. Victor Ambros (Nobel winners in 2024), Dr. Katalin Karikó (Nobel winner in 2023), and Dr. Svante Pääbo (Nobel winner in 2022).
